Identify the exact configuration first
Apple sells AirPods 5 with a USB-C case and AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. Both include active noise cancellation (ANC). The wireless-case package adds a Find My case speaker, longer stated battery life and volume swipes on the stem. AirPods 4 came as a standard version without ANC and a separate ANC version. A simple “4 versus 5” label hides the feature that matters most.

These rows use Apple’s AirPods 5 specifications, AirPods 4 with ANC specifications and standard AirPods 4 specifications. Apple claims stronger cancellation than AirPods 4 with ANC; that manufacturer claim is not an independent fit or noise test.
If you own AirPods 4
If you have standard AirPods 4 and transit or office noise bothers you, AirPods 5 add a concrete feature without requiring the more expensive case. If you own AirPods 4 with ANC, the case is weaker: you already have H2, ANC, wireless charging and a Find My speaker in the case. I would upgrade only after judging fit or cancellation firsthand, if the old batteries have worn down, or if I value a feature of the chosen AirPods 5 package.
Both generations use an open-ear design. Noise perception and comfort vary by ear; we have not physically compared them. Live Translation is also documented for AirPods 4 with ANC under specific iPhone, firmware, language and regional requirements, so it is not an AirPods 5 exclusive.
Case choice and price
Apple announced US launch prices of $129 for AirPods 5 with USB-C case and $149 with Wireless Charging Case. In Spain the launch prices were €149 and €169. These are September 2026 launch figures, not today’s offers. The historical case-price difference buys wireless charging, a case speaker, volume swipe and longer stated runtime. Check the final local price and warranty.
For a discounted AirPods 4 offer, check whether the listing means standard or ANC. A well-priced 4 with ANC may suit you better than the standard 5 if wireless charging and the case speaker matter most; standard 5 may be the better entry route to ANC. AirPods work as Bluetooth headphones with other devices, but some features require compatible Apple software.
Short answer
From standard AirPods 4: AirPods 5 do add ANC. From AirPods 4 with ANC: compare real fit, case and price before replacing them.
